Transform a pumpkin into an illuminated work of art by etching designs instead of carving all the way through. This guide walks you through prepping the pumpkin, etching with precision tools, and preserving your creation for lasting display.

Directions

  1. Prepare the pumpkin: If you want to put a candle inside, cut a hole in the bottom (not the top) and scoop out the insides. Keeping the top intact slows decay and gives a polished look. Remove all seeds and strings, then scrape at least 1/2 inch of flesh from the inner walls to allow light to shine through the etching. Print and cut out your stencil, then attach it to the pumpkin with straight pins. For larger shapes, trace outlines with a washable marker; for fine details, poke holes through the stencil with a pin. If using a faux pumpkin, ensure it's specifically designed for carving.
  2. Etch the design: Use thin, sharp blades for precise etching. A wood carving gouge or rotary tool works well for large sections, while a crafts knife is best for outlining and cutting fine details. For a scratchy texture, roughly scrape a gouge across the pumpkin flesh. For smooth areas, gently drag the blade lengthwise, keeping strokes in the same direction.
  3. Finish and display: Clean up rough edges with carving tools and brush away any loose pumpkin skin. Wipe the design clean with a damp cloth and let the pumpkin dry completely. To extend its life, rub petroleum jelly over all etched areas. Place a battery-operated tea light inside the bottom of the pumpkin and set it on your mantel or porch to display.
