Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at hgtv.com.
These homemade gummy worms are made with a blend of flavored and unflavored gelatin, heavy cream, and a clever straw-molding technique. After chilling, they slide out as perfect little worms ready to be served on a bed of chocolate 'dirt' with mint leaves. It's a fun and easy Halloween project that yields realistic-looking edible crawlies.
Ingredients
Directions
- In a large container with a spout for easy pouring later, combine the 3-ounce package of flavored gelatin and the 1-ounce package of unflavored gelatin.
- Pour in 3 cups of boiling water and stir continuously until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
- Set the mixture aside and let it cool to room temperature.
- Meanwhile, extend all 100 bendy straws to their full length, keeping them straight without bending the accordion section.
- Tightly pack the straws into a cup or container that is about as tall or slightly taller than the straws.
- Once the gelatin mixture is at room temperature, gently pour in 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream. Do not stir; just let it settle on its own.
- Carefully pour the gelatin-cream mixture into the center of the packed straws. The liquid will fill all the straws automatically.
- Place the cup of straws in the refrigerator and let it set for at least 4 hours, or up to 24 hours until fully firm.
- When the gelatin is firm, remove the straw bundle from the cup and peel off any excess Jell-O clinging to the outside of the straws.
- Quickly run each straw under warm water, then immediately squeeze the worm out using your fingers or a rolling pin. They should pop out easily.
- For simple serving, pile the worms in a bowl. For a spooky display, arrange them on chocolate cake crumbs to resemble dirt and garnish with mint leaves.
