Fabric Pumpkins from a Halloween Bandana for Rustic Fall Decor

Create charming Halloween decor by transforming an orange and black bandana into stuffed fabric pumpkins. This project involves cutting, sewing a tube, gathering, stuffing, and adding stick stems to complete the look. Perfect for a rustic or crafty Halloween display.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Take your bandana fabric and cut a rectangle where the length is twice the width, for example 14 inches long by 7 inches wide.
  2. Fold the rectangle in half so the short edges meet, with the pretty sides facing inward.
  3. Using a sewing machine, stitch along those two short edges to create a fabric tube that's open at both ends.
  4. Sew a wide running stitch by hand around one open edge of the tube, going all the way around.
  5. Pull the thread tight to gather the fabric, making sure the knotted end doesn't slip through. Pass the needle through the gathered fabric a few times and knot off to secure.
  6. Turn the fabric tube right side out so it resembles a little bag.
  7. Fill the bag thoroughly with fiber fill until it's plump.
  8. Sew another wide running stitch around the raw edge of the opening.
  9. Gather the fabric again by pulling the thread, tucking in any stray fiber fill as you go, then stitch the opening closed and knot off the thread.
  10. Thread a long strand of embroidery floss with a triple knot at one end. Insert the needle through the center of the pumpkin from the bottom and push it out at the top.
  11. Push the needle all the way through the opposite puckered end and pull the floss very tight, compressing the fabric to create ridges. Repeat this process 6 or 7 times around the pumpkin to form the sections.
  12. While keeping the floss taut, knot it off securely.
  13. Cut stick stems of 1 inch and 1½ inches long, then hot glue them to the center top of each fabric pumpkin.
