These Halloween bat doughnuts feature rich chocolate flavor, black candy coating, and handmade wings. After baking, you dip them in candy melt, add almond sliver ears, and attach royal icing eyes and fangs. They're a fun, festive project for Halloween parties.
Ingredients
Directions
- Set the oven to 350°F and lightly grease your doughnut pans. You'll get about 12 mini and 8 full-size doughnuts.
- Combine the baking powder, baking soda, white sugar, cocoa powder, and flour in one bowl, whisking them together.
- In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter, egg, and milk until they are just blended.
- Pour the dry mixture into the wet and whisk until the batter is smooth with no lumps.
- Fill the greased pans with batter, either by spoon or piping bag. Bake for 9 to 10 minutes, checking doneness by inserting a toothpick—it should come out clean.
- After removing from the oven, let the pan cool for about 5 minutes until safe to touch. Then invert the pan to release doughnuts onto a wire rack to finish cooling.
- Melt the black candy melts and transfer them to a piping bag using a spoon.
- Print one or two copies of the wing template in either mini or regular size, whichever you prefer.
- Place parchment paper over the printed templates. Pipe the melted candy into wing shapes, making two per doughnut. Quickly dust them with black sanding sugar.
- Pour the leftover melted candy melts into a small bowl.
- If the candy begins to firm up, microwave it in 5 to 10 second bursts, stirring between each, until it's fluid again.
- Once the doughnuts are cool, dip each one into the melted candy coating, then sprinkle with black sanding sugar. Let them set until hard.
- Take the almond slivers and dip them about halfway into the black candy melt mixture.
- After both the doughnuts and wings are completely hard, use a knife to cut two small slits on the sides of each doughnut—just wide enough to insert the wings.
- Warm up the remaining black candy melts again until they are smooth and flowing.
- Dip the tip of each wing into the melted candy, then press it into the slit on the doughnut.
- Dip the plain ends of the almond slivers (the part not already coated) into the melted candy and stick them into the top of each doughnut to form ears.
- Scoop the vanilla frosting into a piping bag.
- Cut a tiny tip off the piping bag. Use the frosting to glue on the royal icing eyes and pipe small fangs.
- Allow everything to fully set before storing or packaging.
