Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at theidearoom.net.
These Halloween jello worms are made by filling flexible straws with a creamy gelatin mixture and letting them set. After chilling, you simply push the worms out of the straws for a ghoulishly fun snack. They can be prepared days in advance and hold up well at room temperature for a short time.
Ingredients
Directions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the raspberry or grape gelatin with the unflavored gelatin. Pour in the 3 cups of boiling water and stir until everything is fully dissolved. Refrigerate the mixture until it cools to lukewarm, which takes about 20 minutes.
- While the gelatin cools, stretch each of the 100 plastic straws to their full length, making sure the bendable necks are at one end. Place them upright in a clean, empty 1-quart milk or orange juice carton (or another tall container). Secure the straws together loosely with a rubber band so they stay bundled.
- Once the gelatin is lukewarm, stir in the 3/4 cup of whipping cream and 12 to 15 drops of green food coloring until evenly combined. Carefully pour this mixture into the carton, making sure it fills all the straws.
- Put the carton in the refrigerator and let the gelatin set for at least 8 hours, or you can cover and chill it for up to 2 days.
- Remove the straws from the container. If using a carton, just tear it away. Separate the straws from each other. Working in small batches, run hot tap water over 3 or 4 straws at a time for about 2 seconds. Then, starting from the empty end (opposite the bend), push the worms out using a rolling pin or your fingers.
- Arrange the worms on baking sheets lined with waxed paper. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving, or store them for up to 2 days. They can sit at room temperature for about 2 hours without issue.
