Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at xoxobella.com.
This Halloween pasta dish features mushroom skulls and sausage fingers in a rich marinara sauce. The mushrooms are carved into tiny skulls, sausages become finger shapes with almond nails, and pepperoni adds a crispy touch. It's a playful, savory meal perfect for a spooky night.
Ingredients
Directions
- Cut the mushrooms in half lengthwise.
- Using a straw, poke two holes in each half to create eye sockets.
- Carve 3 or 4 small horizontal slits below the eyes to resemble teeth.
- Cut the sausages in half crosswise.
- Score shallow lines across the center of each half to mimic knuckle creases.
- Trim one end of each sausage piece into a rounded shape to form the nail bed.
- Cook the spaghetti in a large pot according to package directions. Drain, reserving some pasta water.
- Meanwhile, heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Sauté the mushroom skulls until slightly softened, then set aside.
- Pan-fry the sausage fingers until golden brown. (Note: link sausages need to be cooked through; hot dogs are already cooked.) Set aside.
- Crisp the pepperoni slices until the edges curl.
- In the same pan, add the marinara sauce.
- Stir in onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
- Add the cooked pasta along with a splash of reserved pasta water, and toss to combine.
- Stir in parmesan and mozzarella until melted and gooey.
- Top the pasta with the cooked mushroom skulls and sausage fingers.
- Place one almond on the tip of each sausage finger to look like a fingernail.
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves for color.
- Serve immediately.
