Transform plain coconut into festive Halloween decorations with this simple coloring technique!
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at eatsamazing.co.uk.
This guide walks you through coloring 300 grams of desiccated coconut using black, green, orange, and purple food dyes. After mixing the coconut with a touch of water if needed, spread it on lined trays and let it dry for up to 24 hours. Once fully dry, store the sprinkles in sealed containers to preserve their freshness until your next spooky baking project.
Ingredients
Directions
- Prepare four small baking sheets by covering them with parchment paper.
- Weigh out 300 grams of desiccated coconut and split the total evenly among four separate glass or ceramic bowls.
- Introduce a few drops of food coloring into each bowl. Aim for black in one, green in another, a blend of yellow and red to create orange, and a combination of red and blue to achieve purple.
- If your coloring is in gel or powder form, add a small amount of liquid to help it distribute evenly. Start with one teaspoon of water per bowl, and add a bit more only if the mixture remains clumpy.
- Use a small spoon to mix the ingredients thoroughly until every piece of coconut is evenly coated in color.
- Transfer the colored coconut from each bowl onto a separate prepared baking sheet, spreading it out so it forms a single, even layer.
- Allow the trays to sit in a cool, dry location for at least 24 hours, or overnight, to ensure the coconut dries completely. Stir the coconut one or two times during this period to promote even drying.
- When the coconut is fully dry, move it into sealed containers or jars for storage. If you suspect any moisture remains, leave the containers uncovered for a few extra hours before sealing them to prevent spoilage.
- Provided the sprinkles are completely dry and kept in airtight containers, they will remain fresh until the expiration date printed on the original coconut package.
