- Position your pumpkin seedlings near the perimeter of your garden bed, gently guiding the main stem outward so it can spread freely while still leaving room for you to walk through.
- If you prefer a more natural look, let the sprawling stems wander across your yard. Just be careful to trim the grass around the stems without cutting into the plant itself.
- Spread a layer of rich organic matter, about three to four inches thick, directly beneath where the stem will travel to encourage healthy development.
- As the stem grows, it will naturally drop small roots into the nutrient-rich layer below, which helps secure the plant and provides essential nourishment for the developing fruit.
- Once you have finished collecting your pumpkins, remove the old stems, cut down the grass, and blend the remaining organic material back into your yard.
- Finally, scatter new grass seed over the spots where the stems previously grew to help restore your lawn.
