Tips

  • Go to the pumpkin patch early to have your choice of the best ones.
  • If choosing from the field, go before the first frost to avoid frost rings and shorter shelf life.
  • Look for pumpkins with a well-rounded shape that is free of any fresh wounds or soft spots.
  • Make sure the fruit is firm and cannot be pierced easily.
  • Always pick up pumpkins by putting your hand underneath the fruit, not by its stem.
  • Ensure the stem (handle) is firm and not rubbery.
  • Be gentle when placing the pumpkin in your cart or wagon.
