This Halloween ghost pizza starts with homemade dough and a quick blender sauce. Mozzarella slices are cut into ghost shapes with olive features, then placed on the baked pizza. The pizza is cooked in a cast-iron skillet for a crispy, golden crust.
Ingredients
Directions
- Combine the bread flour, instant yeast, and salt in a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Pulse five times to mix. Add the olive oil and water, then process until a rough ball forms, about 30 to 40 seconds. Let the dough rest for 2 minutes, then process for another 30 seconds. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it by hand into a smooth, round ball. Place it in a large, lightly greased bowl, cover tightly with plastic wrap, and let it rise until doubled in size, roughly 1.5 hours. This makes 1 pound of dough, enough for two pizzas.
- Put all the tomato sauce, tomato paste, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, sugar, onion salt, and salt into a blender. Purée for 30 seconds until everything is well combined. This yields about 2.5 cups of sauce.
- Trace an 11-inch circle on a piece of parchment paper, then flip the paper over so the traced side is down. Set it aside.
- Use ghost-shaped cookie cutters to cut ghost figures from the sliced mozzarella cheese. Arrange these ghost cutouts on the parchment paper in the positions you want them to appear on the finished pizza.
- Cut out tiny eyes and mouths from the sliced black olives, and place them onto the mozzarella ghosts to create faces. Set the decorated ghosts aside until the pizza comes out of the oven.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F.
- Brush 1.5 tablespoons of olive oil over the bottom of a 12-inch cast-iron skillet, then set it aside.
- Divide the pizza dough in half. Press and roll one piece into an 11-inch round. Transfer it to the prepared cast-iron skillet, gently pushing it into the corners. Spread 1/3 cup of the pizza sauce over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese and 1.5 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
- Set the skillet over medium heat and cook until the outside edge of the dough is set and the pizza looks lightly puffed, about 5 minutes. Move the skillet to the preheated oven and bake until the crust edge is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 8 to 10 minutes.
- Take the pizza out of the oven and immediately place the prepared mozzarella ghosts on top of the hot pizza.
- Remove the pizza from the cast-iron skillet. If you like, drizzle with 1 teaspoon of olive oil, then serve.
- This recipe makes one 11-inch pizza.
