This Halloween makeup tutorial shows you how to create a gruesome zombie with rotting skin and open wounds. Using simple household items like glue sticks and toilet paper, you'll build realistic texture, then paint with green and black shadows for a sickly complexion. Finish with homemade fake blood made from honey and food coloring for a gory effect.
Directions
- Start by applying a very pale foundation all over your face. Then take a greenish eyeshadow (shade 1 in the palette) and sweep it across your skin, leaving some areas uneven.
- Use the second eyeshadow shade to define the lower lash line and the area under your eyes, creating dark circles.
- Layer the third eyeshadow over the second one, and also dab some under your lips to deepen the shadows.
- Apply the fourth eyeshadow heavily around your eyes. Then, keeping your face as shown in the reference photo, contour your cheekbones and collarbones with the same shade to achieve a gaunt, exhausted look.
- Take a stick glue and cut small pieces off it. Place these pieces on your face to create raised bumps or blisters.
- Get one square of toilet paper and separate it into thin layers. Tear the thinnest layer into small pieces and glue them onto your skin to form a frayed texture.
- Cover most of the toilet paper pieces with foundation, arranging them so the edges lift away from the skin.
- Using black eyeliner, fill in the center of the paper pieces to create a hole effect with the brush, leaving the frayed edges visible to mimic dead or peeling skin.
- With a brush, apply red lipstick in a messy, haphazard way around the hole. Then outline the wound with black eyeshadow, also in an irregular manner.
- Prepare your own fake blood: my attempt was too pale and runny because I added too much water. I used water, maple syrup, food coloring, and a bit of flour to thicken it, but it didn't work. Instead, try mixing honey with food coloring (use gel coloring plus a little water, or liquid coloring plus a dash of black eyeliner for a deeper hue, but skip the water and just use honey).
