Halloween Math Activities
Turn Halloween treats into a learning game with a spooky graphing activity that builds math skills and excitement.
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at notimeforflashcards.com.
This hands-on math activity uses Halloween manipulatives and a simple homemade graph to teach counting, comparing quantities, and making predictions. Kids will love dumping out the jack-o-lantern and placing items on the graph, then checking their guesses by counting. It's a fun way to sneak in some math practice during the spooky season.
Directions
- Collect your supplies: a big white sheet of paper, a ruler, markers, some playful Halloween items to use as counters, and a plastic jack-o-lantern bucket.
- Create a simple graph on the paper. I combined images with written labels so my son can recognize the pictures and start connecting them to the words.
- Select three different types of your Halloween items and put them inside the jack-o-lantern. Make sure each group has a distinct quantity.
- Call your child over (wearing a costume if they want) and let them begin. My child chose to dump all the erasers out, but taking them out one by one works just as well.
- Ask your child to guess – which of the three categories will have the most items? Which will have the least? Why do they think so?
- Have your child place the items onto the correct rows of the graph.
- Continue until all items are on the graph.
- Look at the finished graph together and ask: just by looking, which group has the most? Which has the least?
- Now count each group to verify your predictions.
