Brain Slime: How to Make Zombie Food - Our Family Code

This guide walks you through creating a zombie-themed slime using guar gum, borax, and red food coloring. The process involves mixing guar gum with cold water, letting it rest, dissolving borax in hot water, and combining the two solutions to form a clumpy, brain-like texture. An adult must handle the borax, and the final product should be stored in a sealable plastic bag or container.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Measure out half a cup (120 mL) of chilled water and pour it into one of the small plastic cups.
  2. Sprinkle one teaspoon (5 mL) of guar gum into the water, then use a wooden popsicle stick to stir vigorously until the liquid turns thick and opaque.
  3. Drop in a few drops of red food coloring and mix well to distribute the color evenly. Set the cup aside for 5 to 10 minutes while you prepare the next part.
  4. An adult helper must combine two teaspoons (10 mL) of hot tap water with half a teaspoon (2.5 mL) of borax in the second plastic cup, stirring until the powder completely disappears.
  5. Gradually pour the borax solution into the guar gum mixture while stirring with the wooden stick. The ingredients will clump together into a slimy, brain-like texture.
