Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at hgtv.com.
This DIY project transforms an embroidery hoop into a festive wreath that doubles as a candy dispenser for trick-or-treaters. You’ll paint the outer ring, cover the inner ring with fabric and felt, add decorative trim and pom-poms, then hang it on your door filled with treats. It’s a fun and functional decoration that adds a personal touch to your Halloween setup.
You'll need
Directions
- Take apart the embroidery hoop into its two rings. Coat the larger outer ring with black craft paint using a brush, then leave it to dry.
- As the outer ring dries, lay a sheet of Halloween-themed fabric over the smaller inner hoop. Cut around it with scissors, keeping about 2 inches of extra fabric beyond the hoop.
- For just the lower half of the hoop, place a piece of felt in a contrasting color on top of the fabric. Trim away any felt that extends beyond the hoop.
- After the paint on the outer ring is completely dry, fit it over the fabric and around the inner ring. Secure the hardware while tugging the fabric and felt so they're taut. Make any adjustments to achieve a snug fit.
- Flip the assembled hoop over so the backside faces up. Use scissors to snip off any leftover fabric that hangs past the edge.
- Run a thin line of hot glue along the cut fabric edge to secure it firmly.
- For a decorative band along the felt's top edge, slide sheets of paper between the felt and fabric to shield the fabric. Apply a line of hot glue along the felt's edge, then gently push the trim into the glue as you work around. Trim any extra trim with scissors.
- To hide the hoop's metal hardware, select pom-poms that match your fabric's colors. Begin by hot-gluing larger pom-poms over the hardware, then fill any empty spots with smaller pom-poms.
- Hang the finished wreath on your front door using a wreath hanger. If you'll be out during trick-or-treating, attach a friendly sign telling kids to take candy. And be sure to stock the felt pocket at the bottom with treats.
