Create cute pet pumpkins for Halloween using artificial pumpkins, paint, cardstock, felt, and craft supplies. This project lets you personalize each pumpkin to look like your favorite animal, from cats to birds. Follow the step-by-step instructions to make your own pumpkin pet family.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Using a 1-1/2 inch flat brush, paint the artificial pumpkins with acrylic craft paint. You might need two coats. Let them dry completely. Tip: Choose paint colors that match your pet's fur for a personalized touch.
  2. While the paint dries, cut out templates and trace them onto the correct material (cardstock or felt in the specified colors). Use sharp scissors to cut out the shapes. For small details like the cat's nose, it helps to use small scissors. Use a hole punch for the rabbit's eyes.
  3. Assemble layered animal features, like the cat's eyes, with hot glue. Use just a little glue so it doesn't ooze out.
  4. Draw a mouth on the cat and pupils on the bird's eyes with a black permanent marker. Cut two white pipe cleaners into thirds (about 2-inch pieces). Put a dab of hot glue on each end and attach them to the cat's face.
  5. Glue the facial features onto each pumpkin pet. Gather 6-8 yellow craft feathers, pinch their ends together, and add a dab of hot glue. While still hot, stick the feathers onto the bird pumpkin just in front of the stem. Hold until cool.
