This tutorial teaches you how to paint a playful puppy face using face paints in brown, black, white, and red. You'll create mismatched eye patches, a white muzzle, and a black nose with droopy lines, plus a red tongue with a center crease. Finish with wispy fur texture, whisker dots, and cute pigtail ears or a headband for a complete costume.

Directions

  1. Using a medium makeup brush, apply brown face paint in a large circle around one eye, extending upward over the eyebrow, and fill it in while keeping paint away from the eye itself. Then, with black paint, draw a smaller circle around the other eye but leave it unfilled. Ensure the two circles are different sizes.
  2. For the mouth area, use a makeup sponge to dab white face paint over the tip of the nose, around the mouth, and on the lips. With a detail brush, pull the paint outward in thin strokes to shape the muzzle.
  3. To highlight the nose, use black face paint to create a small rounded triangle at the nose tip. Extend a line downward to meet the top lip, widening as it approaches. Fill in the inner lip line where the lips meet. For a droopy effect, extend lines downward from the mouth corners.
  4. To make the puppy’s tongue, start at one corner of the bottom lip and draw a black line down about an inch to the chin, then curve it back to just past the lip’s center. Fill this shape with red face paint. In the center of the tongue, add a black liner line from the mouth opening down about three-quarters of the tongue length.
  5. Add hair texture to the snout by using a thin brush and brown makeup to paint wispy lines randomly across the white area. With black eyeliner, place a few dots under the nose for whisker spots. Style the hair into high pigtails to resemble floppy ears, or attach fabric ears to a headband. Complete the look with a store-bought costume or a brown sweatsuit with marker-drawn spots.
