Is Sour Candy Acidic? Candy pH Science Activity - Our Family Code
PHOTO · OURFAMILYCODE.COM

This activity explores the science behind sour flavors by measuring the acidity of popular candies. By dissolving treats in water and adding baking soda, you can observe how different candies react to create foam. The amount of bubbling reveals the acid content, helping you rank your sweets from mild to intensely tangy.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Sample a piece of every candy type listed. Decide which flavor hits your taste buds with the most intense tang and explain your reasoning. Rank the treats from the sharpest to the mildest, noting your impressions on a worksheet.
  2. Measure out 1/4 cup of distilled water and pour it into four separate plastic cups. Drop one piece of each candy variety into these containers. Label each cup with a "C" to mark them as your control group, then set them aside for later comparison.
  3. Pour another 1/4 cup of distilled water into four fresh cups. Add one piece of each candy to these new containers and allow them to dissolve fully. If any pieces are dissolving slowly, feel free to crush them to speed up the process.
  4. Once the candy has completely disappeared into the liquid, add 1 tbsp of baking soda to each of the four variable cups. Keep an eye on the mixture as it reacts.
  5. Watch the chemical reaction closely and jot down what you see on your worksheet. Compare the volume of foam produced by each sample. Identify which candy generated the most foam and which produced the least, remembering that higher foam levels indicate stronger acidity.
