This quick Halloween craft uses a black sock, poly-fil, buttons, felt, and ribbon to create a cute cat toy or decoration. Four simple steps—cut, stuff, sew, and embellish—make it perfect for kids.

You'll need

Directions

  1. First, flatten the black sock with the heel facing backward. Estimate the desired size of your cat and cut an arc from the sock that curves down toward the toe, making sure to leave large, pointy ears at the top.
  2. Stuff the sock by firmly packing a generous handful of poly-fil into the toe to form the belly. Then add another ball of poly-fil for the head. If the cat looks too tall, trim more from the top to achieve balanced proportions, then adjust the filling to clearly define head and body.
  3. Using black thread, whip stitch across the top of the stuffed sock from one ear tip to the other. This closes the sock; slightly uneven stitches add charm.
  4. Finish by tying a ribbon bow around the cat's neck (7/8 inch ribbon shown). Glue on two button eyes and a pink felt triangle for the nose. For extra detail and a few more minutes, stitch white thread whiskers and a mouth.
