Make a Kid's Shark Costume for Halloween
Turn your kid into a shark this Halloween with a simple hoodie transformation!
Our own summary of the original — the full post and photos live at hgtv.com.
This quick costume uses a gray zip-up hoodie and felt to create a dorsal fin and shark teeth. Freehand the fin shape, sew it into a back slit, and add felt teeth to the hood. No zipper or fancy sewing skills required!
You'll need
Directions
- Use a ruler to find the vertical center line on the back of the hoodie; mark it with a chalk pencil. With sharp scissors, cut along that line about halfway up the hoodie back.
- Fold the gray felt quarter in half and place it on your work surface so the fold is away from you. Use a pencil or chalk pencil to draw a dorsal fin shape about 6 inches high and 8 inches wide. Cut through both layers along the drawn line.
- Pin the two fin pieces together and sew the left and right sides, leaving the bottom edge open. Turn the fin right-side out and smooth the seam flat.
- Insert the fin into the cut slit on the hoodie back and pin it in place from the inside. Check that the fin isn't covered when the hood is down. Sew along the pin line with gray thread, then remove the pins.
- Cut along the center of the fold at the hood's hem. If the hoodie has a drawstring, remove it. Cut two 1-inch-wide strips from the white felt. Make angled cuts about 1 inch apart to create triangular 'teeth'.
