This Halloween activity lets kids explore melting and freezing with a gross-out green brain. Use warm water and salt to make the ice brain dissolve, and squirt saltwater from syringes for extra gooey action. It's a spooky, hands-on science play that's simple to set up.
Directions
- Collect a brain-shaped mold, green food coloring, novelty syringes, salt, a tray, and an old towel.
- Fill the mold with water and mix in a few drops of green food coloring.
- Put the mold in the freezer and leave it for three days until the water is completely frozen.
- Prepare a bowl of warm water, have salt ready, then remove the ice brain from the mold and place it on a tray.
- Pour or squirt warm water over the ice brain to start melting it.
- Sprinkle salt onto the ice to accelerate the melting process.
- Optionally, dissolve salt in warm water, draw it into the syringes, and spray the solution onto the brain.
