Learn how to create a convincing mummy costume with aged gauze wrappings and special effects makeup. The process involves staining gauze, applying pale foundation, sculpting hollow eyes with dark shadows, and bruising the lips. Finish by wrapping the face with gauze secured by latex and adding stippled color for an aged look.

Directions

  1. Soak gauze or elastic stretch net in coffee or tea for an hour to give it an aged look. Then wring out the excess liquid and let it dry completely.
  2. Using a makeup sponge, apply a foundation several shades lighter than your natural skin tone all over your face, including your lips. Next, set it with translucent powder using a powder puff, then brush off the extra.
  3. With a makeup brush, apply black shadow followed by brown shadow into the hollows of your eyes. A messy, uneven application makes it look more eerie.
  4. Use a flat brush with brown eye shadow to create a bruised effect on your lips. Then, pucker your lips and add red shadow to the natural creases.
  5. Now, start wrapping your head with gauze, playing around with placement. Secure the gauze with liquid latex, spirit gum, or double-stick medical tape, being careful to keep it away from your mouth, nose, and eyes.
  6. Once the gauze is in place, use a stipple sponge to mix red and brown eye shadow, then apply it to your forehead and cheeks. Finish by wrapping your head and neck with gauze and adding more stippled color if desired. For the costume, you can buy one or make your own by gluing gauze to a white sweatsuit.
