This craft project guides you through building a scarecrow doll from common household items. Using popsicle sticks as the frame, you'll dress it in fabric clothes, add a cardstock face, and top it with a burlap hat. Perfect for Halloween decorations or a fun kids' activity.

You'll need

Directions

  1. Choose a fabric scrap for the scarecrow's shirt. For instance, you might pick a 6 inch by 4 inch blue and white buffalo plaid check print.
  2. Fold the fabric in half along its longer edge.
  3. With fabric scissors, cut the folded fabric into a shirt shape: sleeves on the open sides and a rounded neckline cut from the closed end.
  4. From scrap denim or another fabric, cut two strips. Also cut a rectangle and split it lengthwise down the middle to form the legs of the jeans.
  5. Flip the jeans over, fold the slit edges inward, and secure them with fabric glue or stitching.
  6. Cut a piece of burlap fabric for the hat.
  7. Shape the burlap into a cone and glue it to hold.
  8. Cut a circle from cardstock. Use the printable template to cut out eyes and nose, then glue them onto the circle. Draw a mouth with a black marker. Glue short yarn pieces to the top for hair.
  9. Take a long and a short popsicle stick (or cut a long one shorter). Glue the short stick horizontally across the top of the long one to make a cross.
  10. Put the shirt's neck opening over the top end of the long popsicle stick (above the crossbar).
  11. Adjust the shirt, then glue the jeans underneath so they slightly overlap the shirt's bottom.
  12. Glue the two fabric strips over the shoulders, one on each side. Then attach two small buttons where the strips overlap the jeans.
  13. Attach the cardstock head and burlap hat to finish the scarecrow.
